These days an information technology (IT) consultant is much more than a CV or Resume. When I went back to get my masters degree, I was allowed to submit an academic "Experiential Learning Portfolio" or ELP. This ELP was to be constructed in such a way as to provide work history, work product and accomplishment artifacts (e.g. letters of recommendation, appraisals, work products, and so on). It occurred to me that this type of portfolio should be publicly available for all senior IT professionals - and the Internet affords the perfect canvas. Today's IT landscape covers hundreds of skills and disciplines, and IT consulting is gathering more and more specialized individuals. As with medical doctors, the IT general practitioner is almost a thing of the past. With a unique background in both enterprise solutions engineering and commercial software design and development, I am comfortable confronting a broad range of IT challenges and may be one of the few GP's left in IT consulting. In over 25 years of applied experience, I have seen this industry grow and have been part and parcel of that growth. I have been engaged in many key IT disciplines from operations and networking to project management and business transformation. I have worked on some of the world’s largest technical migrations, consolidations and IT engineering challenges. I also have written commercial software that was once installed in over 50 of the world's Fortune 500 companies. One day every independent consultant will have an experiential portfolio on the Internet. This is one of the first. I hope it proves valuable to those seeking to learn more about my experience, methods and practices. With Regards: J. William Bennett Artifact Footnote: Many Letters of Recommendation and/or Verification were received as electronic media, email responses and the like. With the permission of the authors and respondents I reformatted many of the artifacts into pdf documents with proper letterhead, as needed. Content was not altered. Artifact authors are identified with current phone numbers for content verification, as may be required.
