for J. William Bennett

William Wrigley, Jr. (1861-1932) once said "When two men in business always agree, one of them is unnecessary."  Without experiential deliberation there can be no change. Without change there can be no progress.  Doing something "the way its always been done" or finding no fault in a faulty process, is as common today as it was in Wrigley's day. Not addressing such issues can render your business unnecessary.

Consulting is defined by many as subject matter expert (SME) contracting, staff augmentation or project staffing.  When you browse the Internet for 'consulting companies' you find mostly body shops and headhunters.

Small consulting firms like mine, that engage in solutions engineering, often are sub-contracted by Big-5 type firms (IBM, Accenture, Bearingpoint, et al) that require project SMEs or solution project managers.  The solution is adopted - and preliminary project plans are often in place - before we are ever engaged.  This limits our input to the solution.  We then become what the industry calls 'integrators' and project managers.

I have been a project manager, consultant, contract staff member, integrator, and SME on dozens of large projects.  I have also been a sole-source IT solution provider.  Without question, being a sole-source solution provider is the most rewarding and, in my opinion, has provided the most value to the client.  Sole source engagement references include:

Sole-source provider means that my team and I developed all of the feasibility, planning, justifications, cost-benefit-analysis (CBA), ROI models, project plans and execution plans - and executed the project plans to completion.

With technology (e.g. SOA) and technical applications (COTS, ASPs, ...) gaining momentum faster than Moore's Law would seem to allow, finding and implementing solutions that are positioned for change and scalability is becoming more difficult.  My experience can help any IT organization make better decisions, in less time and with less risk.  All of the above engagements required unique skills be employed or learned. No solution provider ever has all the answers right out of the box.  If they tell you they do - get another provider.

I have provided the following disciplines to both sub-contract and sole-source solutions :

  • Enterprise applications and commercial systems software design & development;
  • Complex hardware, software and network infrastructure implementations;
  • ITIL/ITSM based Systems Management controls and related solutions.
  • Enterprise technical support, automation & integration;
  • Security systems design, administration & support;
  • Business recovery architecture and deployment; business continuation planning (BCP);
  • Problem & Incident Management system design and implementation;
  • Change & Configuration Management system design and implementation;
  • Performance Management modeling, administration and support;
  • Enterprise Architecture (EA) and Business Process Modeling (BPM) & Analysis;
  • Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) design;
  • Project management, PMO and program management;
  • Benchmark & best practices studies;
  • Feasibility studies, detailed ROI and CBA products;
  • IT systems and services business case development;
